Think you may be confusing the pace stick with a swagger stick. As far as I know swagger sticks are (were) carried by the infantry gunners and the signals. The Cav carry riding crops, and the above RTR and Irish variations still stand. Problem is Barrack dress has pretty much disappeared, as CS 95 is the order of the day.

I think this is a matter of long established tradition which persisted to some extent in the British army up to date (I could only be certain of up to 1980) As Bill says many regiments had special types e.g in some Irish Regiments, officers and warrant officers carried what I think they called a 'black thorn' ( a polished walking stick with a knob and knots) .
